Two Louisiana-connected documentaries, a chance to travel with Conan O'Brien and a new "Masterpiece" drama — here are four shows to put on your viewing radar this month:
"ROOTS OF FIRE": The award-winning feature-length documentary highlights "the cultural legacy of Cajun music and the artists currently preserving the rich tradition for future generations," according to a news release. The film has already been screened at 25 film festivals and won 11 awards, including Documentary of the Year from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Look for performances from the Pine Leaf Boys, Feufollet, Jourdan Thibodeaux et Les Rôdailleurs, Bonsoir Catin and more. On Sunday, the doc will be available on Amazon Prime and Apple TV as well as available for purchase.
"CONAN O’BRIEN MUST GO": The new Max Original travel series is based on the popular podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan.” The former late night show host hops around the globe to visit with new friends he's made on his podcast. O'Brien stops in Norway, Thailand, Argentina and Ireland. All four episodes are now available to stream on Max.
"JERRY LEE LEWIS: TROUBLE IN MIND": Ethan Coen ("Raising Arizona, "Fargo," "The Big Lebowski") directs this 2022 music documentary on the legendary Louisiana singer whose songs led the charts in the 1950s. Wilder than his rock and roll tunes was the Ferriday native's personal life, which often made headlines. The documentary was nominated for a Golden Eye at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. It's now streaming on Netflix.
"MARYLAND ON MASTERPIECE": Premiering on PBS at 8 p.m. Sunday, the drama "is a love story of two sisters, Becca and Rosaline, who find themselves thrown together by the sudden death of their mother, Mary," a network release states. In the midst of their grief, the siblings learn their mother led a secret life far away from her home with their father. Also available at pbs.org and on the PBS app.
