Scam alert

The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office is warning residents about scammers posing as sheriff's deputies and requesting money.

Scammers are claiming to be sheriff's deputies and telling residents they owe fines and court costs for past citations, the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post Wednesday. The scammers are threatening residents that a warrant for their arrest will be issued if they do not send funds using gift cards or cash apps.

"If you are contacted by a scammer, HANG UP! Contact the LPSO at 225-686-2241 x1," the Sheriff's Office said.

In the post, the Sheriff's Office said it does not accept payment using gift cards or cash apps and urges residents to not give out personal information over the phone.
