City leaders in Livingston Parish's town of Killian said Wednesday that they still don't know what is causing the discoloration of the town's water supply, which has led to an ongoing emergency declaration and boil water advisory.
"Water samples have been collected from numerous places and sent off for testing," Killian leaders posted to the town Facebook page. "As of right now we simply don’t know what the source is or what is in the water."
The situation began late Monday night around 9 p.m., when brown water started appearing out of faucets on the west side of town, then spread to other areas throughout Tuesday, the Killian post said.
"We are waiting to hear back from the governor after the mayor meets with him this morning."
A boil water advisory is issued when water is unsafe for consumption, including untreated water used in ice, fountain drinks, food preparation and teeth brushing.
In a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon, the town said residents can pick up two cases of water per household member at the town hall as supplies last.
Residents with special needs and health conditions can call the town at (225) 522-6785 to have water delivered to them, the town said.
"We are not turning people away. We have a limited supply, while we wait on additional water deliveries," Killian said in its online post.
