A Lake Charles elementary school was evacuated Wednesday after an email sent to police and media claimed the letter's sender had killed a staff member and planted a bomb in the school.
Oak Park Elementary, 2001 18th St., resumed classes after the Lake Charles Police Department evacuated the campus to conduct a search.
Police received a call about 10:40 a.m. notifying them about the threatening email, according to a department announcement. Officers did a sweep of the building and deemed it safe. Students and teachers were back in their classrooms by noon, KPLC reported.
In an email sent to the Acadiana Advocate and several organizations, the sender claimed to be a teacher who decided to kill themself. The sender wrote that they had planted a "lead azide device" in the school after they killed a colleague and left the body in a bathroom.
The sender claimed they were driving to the Orleans Justice Center to "take my revenge" and then cut their own throat.
Police said in a phone call that the email was a hoax, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Anyone with additional information on the incident is asked to call the Lake Charles Police Department at (337) 491-1311.
