The Baton Rouge-shot biographical drama "The Iron Claw" earned an estimated $5.1 million at the box office its opening weekend, finishing in sixth place nationally.
A24, the studio behind the story of the tragedy-stricken Von Erich wrestling family, expected the earnings to go up to $7.5 million once Monday totals are in, Associated Press reported.
The film opened on 2,774 screens on Friday.
Zac Efron, starring as Kevin Von Erich, is garnering critical praise for his "transformative lead performance," AP also said.
Meaning, on online review site Rotten Tomatoes, "The Iron Claw" has received 87% positive reviews and a 93% audience score.
"Powerfully acted and profoundly sad, 'The Iron Claw' honors its fact-based story with a dramatization whose compassionate exploration of family ties is just as hard-hitting as its action in the wrestling ring," the review consensus stated.
The movie also stars Jeremy Allen White ("The Bear") as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, Maura Tierney as the family’s matriarch Doris and Lily James as Kevin’s wife Pam.
Local talent includes Scott Innes (the ring announcer) and the band LVVRS.
