If you were born after Jan. 1, 1984, and you want to operate a boat powered by an engine exceeding 10 horsepower, then you must successfully complete a boating education course.

So, mark April 27 on your calendar. That’s when state Wildlife and Fisheries will offer courses needed to get a boating-education certificate.

It’s the 13th annual Boating Education Lagniappe Day.

Courses will be offered at 11 statewide locations with Wildlife and Fisheries instructors.

There is no charge, lunch will be provided and there’s the promise of door prizes.

The reason for this early publication is courses fill quickly and classes fill on a first-come, first-served basis.

Locations in the south-central and southeastern parishes include:

  • Iberville Parish Library, 24605 J. Gerald Berret Blvd., Plaquemine;
  • Bayou Segnette State Park, 7777 Westbank Expressway, Westwego;
  • LDWF office, 200 Dulles Rd., Lafayette;
