NATO 75 Years

FILE - Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addresses a media conference prior to a meeting of NATO defense ministers at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023. NATO is set to celebrate on Thursday, April 4, 2024, 75 years of collective defense across Europe and North America as Russia's war on Ukraine enters its third year.

Will the U.S. never learn? Ever since Eisenhower took the Vietnam battle handoff in 1957, most of our interventions have been costly and ultimately ineffective.

Rattle them off: Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and now Ukraine and the Israel-Palestine conflict. All are stories as old as the Bible. But could things stumble into a world war of Biblical proportions?

Expanding empires constantly feel out other countries in which to invest, ensuring a chance to profit. Why must we pick countries that abut the borders of the world’s biggest superpowers (think Taiwan)? Why is one of the biggest debtor nations in history still playing the “I’m a superpower” card?

Where are the fiscal hawks or are they well on the way to extinction? Money is easy to give away but hard to claw back. When do we drain the swamp? When do we agree to cut the federal bloat, including Social Security, Medicare and everything else?

We, the people, could agree every individual and every department receiving money from the federal government must take a 25% cut. This could be achieved through a three-year reduction plan. It won’t happen. (Full disclosure: I receive Social Security and a modest military pension).
