'There are symphonies across the country that sell out all of their concerts. There's no reason that Baton Rouge can't do the same,' says Eric Marshall, new executive director of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, standing beside the musical sculpture outside the Unitarian Church's choir room.

The Board of Directors of the Baton Rouge Symphony announces the departure of Executive Director Eric Marshall, effective June 15. Marshall has accepted a position as the CEO at Orchestra Iowa.

During his tenure, Eric Marshall has played a pivotal role in shaping the BRSO's artistic direction and organizational growth. Under his leadership the symphony has seen significant achievements through unprecedented challenges, with Marshall ensuring uninterrupted performances during the pandemic while prioritizing the safety of both artists and audiences.

Marshall's innovative spirit shone brightly as he spearheaded the creation of two new music series — Concerts with Candles and pop-up concerts throughout the community. His visionary initiatives and dynamic collaborations with community organizations have attracted diverse audiences and deepened the symphony's educational outreach, ensuring its continued relevance and impact throughout the Baton Rouge area.

“The BRSO and I have been so fortunate to benefit from Eric Marshall's insightful and caring leadership. He has been a joy to work with not only due to his special combination of administrative vision and keen artistic sense, but also because of how he fosters genuine relationships between the orchestra and the community," said Adam Johnson, the symphony's music director. "I wish him the best both personally and professionally and am grateful for all he has brought to the orchestra and to Baton Rouge.”

“Eric has brought the BRSO to a new level of excellence with his imaginative and innovative programs and fundraising," added Donna Torres, president of the symphony's board of directors. "The BRSO has risen to new heights under his leadership; Eric leaves the organization in a strong position for continued growth and service to our community. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I offer our thanks to Eric and wish him and his family all the best in their adventure.”

The Board of Directors will begin a comprehensive search for an executive director to build upon Marshall's legacy and lead the symphony into its next chapter of growth and innovation.
