Tax renewal election Saturday

If you didn't vote early, remember to vote in the election on the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office millage renewal. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, April 27. 

Older adults have chance to learn through OLLI

OLLI at LSU Felicianas chapter is holding two events in May.

A coffee is May 7. Allen Ownings, a horticulturist with Clegg's Nursery and Bracy's Nursery, as well as a former professor at LSU AgCenter, will speak about Louisiana super plants, plant solutions and other plant ideas. The meeting is at 10 a.m. May 7 at Fellowship Hall, First Baptist Church, 12404 La. 10, St. Francisville. Guests over age 50 are welcome. 

The OLLI Learn & Dine is May 1. A presentation on Disc Golf will be held at 10:30 a.m. the West Feliciana Sports Park, 10226 W. Feliciana Parkway, St. Francisville. Lunch is at noon at Sonny’s Pizza, 7157 U.S. 61. Colby Bennett will introduce the sport of disc golf to attendees. No registration is needed. The event is free, and adults age 50 and older are welcome.

Galvez Rum Festival planned

Galvez Tasting Rooms & Gardens, 1848 Charter St., Jackson, is celebrating its grand opening with an inaugural Galvez Rum Festival on April 27. Tickets are $10 at galvezrum.com/rumfest.

The festival will start at 11 a.m. with a few words from community leaders, followed by a lineup of bands with Southland Band, Jeffrey Broussard & the Creole Cowboys, Papo Y Son Mandao, and Dee Fleming & the Zydeco Train. The distillery will have limited rum-tasting spots throughout the day, and cocktails will be served.

Raffles, games and activities are planned. Food vendors and local restaurants will be available and accessible to festival patrons.

Learn about herbs

The Southern University Ag Center will hold its annual Spring Garden Workshop at 9 a.m. April 25 at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena Multi-Purpose Building, 14600 Scenic Highway, Baton Rouge.

The theme is “Earth Day, Herb Day: Down to Earth Herbs for Everyday Use.” Topics will include Herb Propagation, Herbs for IPM, Feeding Herbs to Livestock and Traditional Uses of Herbs and more

Walker Percy Weekend tickets on sale

At the ninth annual Walker Percy Weekend in St. Francisville, May 31-June 1, presenters and panelists will explore how Percy, and the writers he inspired, explore where Southern fiction has been and where it is going. Buy tickets at bontempstix.com/events/the-2024-walker-percy-weekend-5-31-2024.

  • Audubon Day 2024 at LSU Hill Memorial Library, 95 Field House Drive, is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27. The library holds an annual viewing of the famed double elephant folio edition of John James Audubon’s Birds of America (London, 1827-1838).
