If you’re looking for the perfect gift for someone special in your life, consider a houseplant that can serve as a lasting reminder of your relationship.
One of the things we love most about houseplants is how meaningful they can be. When cared for properly, they symbolize growth and love, which can be a beautiful representation of the feelings shared between partners. They can also yield numerous positive benefits for a loved one. Houseplants bring a touch of nature indoors, can improve air quality, create a relaxing atmosphere, and add a pop of green to inside spaces. Plus, numerous studies show that having plants in the home can contribute to a sense of well-being and reduce stress. There’s just something about caring for a plant, watching it bloom and smelling its aroma each day that seems to put the mind at ease.
At Louisiana Nursery, we are proud to offer a wide range of houseplants for everyone from experienced indoor gardeners to green thumb newbies. But, we are especially excited to have two rare varieties of philodendrons that are prized by plant collectors and enthusiasts for their unique colors and patterns.
The first variety is The Pink Princess, which is renowned for its beautiful variegation. The leaves are a deep green color with splashes of bright pink, making it look like an artist’s palette. Mature leaves can be large and are usually oval-shaped with pointed tips. The pink on the leaves can range from a light pastel shade to a deep, almost neon hue. The stems are usually a dark purple or burgundy, adding to its royal appeal.

Since The Pink Princess is a climber, it’s best to provide it with a moss pole or trellis to support its growth. Over time, it can reach heights of several feet, although the growth tends to be slower compared to other philodendrons due to its variegation.
When it comes to caring for The Pink Princess, make sure to keep it in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little can reduce the vibrant pink variegation. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy, and reduce watering during winter. These plants thrive in temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit and prefer high humidity. Consider placing it on a humidity tray or using a humidifier to encourage its growth.

One of the things we love most about The Pink Princess is that no two are exactly alike! The pink variegation is a result of a mutation and can be quite unpredictable. Also, the degree of pink can change as the plant matures, making it a dynamic and ever-evolving houseplant.
The other philodendron variety that gets people talking is The White Knight, which is coveted among plant enthusiasts in part because it is less common than The Pink Princess and other varieties. In The White Knight, the white variegation is stable, meaning it’s less likely to revert back to a fully green form. This striking variegation against a backdrop of dark green leaves creates a true sight to behold. The white patches can sometimes appear creamy or slightly yellowish, giving the plant a dreamy appearance. The stems are often streaked with both white and green.
Like The Pink Princess, The White Knight is also a climbing variety and can benefit from support like a moss pole. Due to its variegation, it may grow at a slightly slower pace.

To care for The White Knight, place it in bright, indirect light and avoid placing it in direct sunlight for extended periods. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. The White Knight is best kept in temperatures ranging from 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and, similar to The Pink Princess, loves high humidity.
Both The Pink Princess and The White Knight are testaments to the wonders of nature. Their unique variegations make them stand out in any collection and are sure to be conversation starters. In fact, either one would make a great Valentine’s Day gift for someone special in your life. If you know someone who finds joy in giving plants care and attention, these plants can be a long-lasting stunning display of nature’s artistry.
