Local forecasts guarantee perfect weekend weather, so why take advantage of it by visiting a Baton Rouge museum?

Make that several museums, because many of the city's downtown museums will offer free admission Sunday.

The collaborative effort is called Free First Sunday, which happens on the first Sunday of each month. In the lineup of participating museums are the Louisiana Art & Science Museum, Louisiana's Old State Capitol, LSU Museum of Art, LSU Center for River Studies and Magnolia Mound Plantation.

What will you see when you get there? Well, each museum has its own collection of exhibits and programming.

Here's what's on tap:

Young patrons of the Louisiana Art & Science Museum will be able to engage in or science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, or STEAM-based, activities in the museum's new gallery, 'The Seed.'

The museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Its new interactive gallery, The Seed, will be open with hands-on activities for kids, and the Pennington Planetarium will be showing "3-2-1 Liftoff!" at 1 p.m., "From the Blue Planet to the Red Planet preceded by The Sky Tonight" at 2 p.m., "Supermassive Black Holes" at 3 p.m. and "Forward to the Moon" at 5 p.m.

Exhibits on view in the galleries are "Second Nature: Artworks by Chase Mullen" in the Soupçon Gallery; "Improvisation: The Art and Healing Power of Jazz" in The Republic Finance Gallery, "To Be Seen, To Be Heard, To Be Valued in the STEAM Gallery, "The Art of Looking Up: Following the Stars, from Ancient Cultures to the Webb" in the Main Gallery: Second Floor and "Pinpointing the Stars" in the Universe Gallery.

While there, visit Jason, the Tyrannosaurus in the Solar System Gallery and the Ptolemaic period mummy in the Ancient Egypt gallery.

Though admission is always free at Louisiana's Old State Capitol, it is only open on Sundays on Free First Sunday. Hours are 1-4 p.m.

It's also a short walk distance from both the Louisiana Art & Science Museum and the LSU Museum of Art.

If you haven't yet experienced the museum's 4-D, immersive "The Ghost of the Castle" theatrical presentation, what better time to see it? The museum's permanent exhibit on Huey Long also offers an immersive experience, along with historic artifacts related to Louisiana's most notorious governor.

Also on view are the exhibits, "Remembering the 1984 Louisiana World Exhibition" and "Patient No More: People with Disabilities Securing Civil Rights."

The LSU Museum of Art is showing 'One Stitch at a Time: Southern Vernacular Quilts' through June 23.

The LSU Museum of Art will celebrate Free First Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a special concert and instrument petting zoo presented by the LSU Chamber of Music.

While there, visitors also can visit the exhibits, "One Stitch at a Time: Southern Vernacular Quilts" from the collection of Doug McCraw and the Hilliard Art Museum at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette and the ongoing show, "Art in Louisiana: Views into the Collection."

And for kids, there's the Family Gallery, which offers opportunities to participate in fun, interactive activities while exploring and learning about art.

The Louisiana Coastal and Restoration Authority will present the program "Restoration or Retreat" during the center's Free First Sunday hours from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

While there, explore the immersive model of the final 179 miles of the Mississippi River at this state-of-the-art facility and learn more about Louisiana’s working delta.

The 232-year-old main house and surrounding 16 acres at BREC's Magnolia Mound Plantation educates others about the lifestyle that formed the culture of Louisiana.
