The New Orleans Citizen Committee applauds key legislators who have reversed the state's rejection of federal funds to feed poor kids this summer. However, the real credit should go to the unified interracial and multiethnic voices of people across Louisiana who demanded a change in a misguided political decision. The absurd rejection of $71 million because the state has a $3.7 million administrative fee didn't sit well with rural, suburban or inner city Louisiana.

The truth is that food insecurity is a major problem, with Louisiana ranking second in the nation for child poverty and over 234,000 children battling food insecurity. The ripple effects of hunger extend far beyond an empty stomach, undermining academic performance, health and mental wellness, and trapping children in a cycle of poverty. It should also be noted that more than 10,000 seniors in Orleans Parish also have food insecurity issues.

We thank those who publicly opposed the food program rejection and worked to get funding implemented this summer. U.S. Rep. Troy Carter played a key role in getting the federal government to bend the rules. Our local delegation, key members of the City Council, numerous civil rights and civic organizations and people throughout Louisiana demanded the program be funded!

Meanwhile, the NOCC is partnering with Total Community Action to gather information and develop effective outreach to let people in every neighborhood know where and when food distribution opportunities are accessible. Needy families will have some resources this summer when the benefits hit in June, but the long term impact of food insecurity is far from being solved. NOCC and TCA will continue our efforts and invite all food providers to contact us at info@ftcnola.org
