Police sirens

A 3-year-old girl died Thursday evening after being found unresponsive in False River, Pointe Coupee Sheriff Rene Thibodeaux said Sunday.

The Sheriff's Office received a call shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday about a child missing near the 9000 block of Island Road in Ventress, Thibodeaux said. The girl, who has not been publicly identified, was found unresponsive in False River and airlifted to a Baton Rouge hospital.

The girl was pronounced dead Thursday night, Thibodeaux said.

An investigation is ongoing, he said.

Thursday's death is the second death of a toddler on the westside in the past week.

A day earlier, a 3-year-old girl drowned while swimming in an Addis pool, Addis Assistant Police Chief Jason Langlois said.

Emergency officials were called to a residence on River's Edge Drive in Addis shortly after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The girl was airlifted to a hospital, where she was officially pronounced dead, Langlois said.

The Addis death is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
