An armed domestic disturbance call on Sunday led to a police shooting, a chase and two crashes on Kaliste Saloom Road, one of which overturned a vehicle, the Lafayette Police Department said.
Lafayette Police Department officers responded to a call about a domestic disturbance involving weapons in the 100 block of Shady Ridge Lane around 2:37 p.m. Sunday. Once on scene, officers met two of the victims and learned that the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Drevian Dugas, had left in a vehicle with a third victim. Dugas was armed with a rifle, Lafayette Police spokesperson Sgt. Robin Green said in a statement.
The department’s SWAT unit was called out. Officers found Dugas and the third victim inside his vehicle on a neighboring street, New Center Drive, and attempted to stop his vehicle. During the attempted stop, at least one officer fired their weapon.
Dugas then fled the area, driving erratically as officers pursued him, police said. He reached the 2300 block of Kaliste Saloom Road, where he crashed into another vehicle at the road’s intersection with Lake Farm Road, causing the other vehicle to overturn. Dugas’s vehicle then slid into oncoming traffic and struck a second vehicle, Green said.
Lafayette police units pinned Dugas’s vehicle in to prevent him from escaping or crashing into anyone else, she said.
The victim with Dugas was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The driver and the passenger in the vehicle struck and overturned by Dugas were taken to a local hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.
Dugas was apprehended and taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which included injuries from the police shooting, Green said.
Dugas was released from the hospital in stable condition and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on two counts of aggravated assault and counts of domestic abuse battery and false imprisonment, in addition to other warrants, Lafayette Police spokesperson Det. Ken Handy said. Dugas was booked around 10 p.m. Sunday, according to online booking records.

Louisiana State Police is investigating the incident from the time of the police shooting until Dugas was apprehended and will handle any criminal charges the result, Handy said.
Three officers are on paid administrative leave, though not all necessarily fired their weapons, Handy said. Any use of force employed leading up to the officer-involved shooting will be examined; who did what will be part of the State Police investigation, he said.
