The Dutchtown High School, see here in undated photo, will gain a new fieldhouse and a renovated agricultural and industrial arts space with the $110 million bond approval.

Ascension Parish voters on Saturday overwhelmingly approved the renewal of a property tax to fund $110 million in school renovations, expansions and a new school building.

With all precincts reporting, 79% of voters supported the 20-year bond, which will pay for classrooms, new gyms, improved kitchens, better air conditioning, new security systems and roof replacements across the public school system, district officials say.

A homeowner with a homestead exemption and a property worth $250,000 will continue to pay about $263.90 per year for the tax.

Headlining the list of projects from this funding is a $50 million expansion of Lake Elementary School, a prekindergarten through eighth-grade school in the northeastern corner of the parish.

The bonded debt will be financed through the renewed 15.08-mill capital construction property tax.

Saturday marked the sixth time parish voters have renewed the tax since 1999.
